Why it’s so hard for them
Fear of the dark often shows up around the same age a child's imagination takes off. They can now picture things they can't see, and the dark is full of things they can't see.
Telling them there's nothing there doesn't help much, because the fear isn't a fact to be corrected. It helps more to see another kid feel the same fear and find a way to feel a little braver.
How the story goes
Every book is written from what you tell us, so yours will be its own. Here’s the shape a story like this usually takes.
The fear is named
When the light goes off, the hero's room changes. The story says what they feel and why, without making the dark into a monster.
A small brave step
The hero tries one thing they can do on their own: a night-light check, a slow breath, saying goodnight to each shape in the room.
Practice over a few nights
The first night is still a bit scary. The next is easier. Brave grows with practice, not all at once.
Morning comes
The hero wakes up proud, and a grown-up notices the effort, not just the result.
Questions to ask while you read
The conversation is where the lesson sticks. Pause on a page and try one of these, then let your child lead. Why we build books this way.
- What did the room look like when the light went out?
- What brave thing did the hero try? Which one would you try?
- What could we put in your room to help?
Questions parents ask
Will a story about the dark make my child more scared?
Our stories never use frightening images or monsters. The dark stays an ordinary room, the fear is named gently, and the story ends with the hero safe and proud.
What age is this best for?
Fear of the dark is most common in toddlers and early school years, so ages 2 to 4 and 5 to 7 fit best. You choose the reading age when you create the book.
Can it be read as part of our bedtime routine?
That's what it's for. Books for ages 2-4 have 24 pages, with short, simple text suited to a wind-down, and many families read the same one for a week or two while the new habit settles.
Do I pick from ready-made books?
No. Every book is written and illustrated new from what you tell us: what your child is facing, a hero you name, their reading age and the setting. This page is a starting point, not a finished book.
How much does a book cost?
Ages 2–4: 24 pages for $7.99; Ages 5–7: 28 pages for $9.99; Ages 7–10: 32 pages for $11.99. Length and price follow the reading age you select, paid once. No subscription. Sign in before checkout and your first book is 20% off.
Do you use a photo of my child?
No, never. The hero is an original illustrated character you name and describe, so the story is about what your child is going through, not their face.
How do I get the book?
Writing and illustrating takes a few minutes after checkout. You read it in our online reader, download it as a PDF to print at home, and we email you when it's ready.
