Why it’s so hard for them

For a young child, the first day of school is a lot of unknowns at once: where to put their things, who the grown-ups are, whether anyone will play with them. Worry fills the gaps.

Walking through it ahead of time, in a story, turns some of those unknowns into something familiar. Your child gets to rehearse the day and see that the hard part, the goodbye, passes.

How the story goes

Every book is written from what you tell us, so yours will be its own. Here’s the shape a story like this usually takes.

  1. Butterflies

The hero feels nervous on the way to school. The story says that's normal and why it happens.

  2. A goodbye routine

A small ritual, like a hug and a special phrase, helps the hero let go at the door.

  3. One brave hello

The hero tries one small step, like asking another child their name or joining a game.

  4. Pickup time

The day had a hard moment and a good one. The hero can't wait to tell their grown-up about it.

Questions to ask while you read

The conversation is where the lesson sticks. Pause on a page and try one of these, then let your child lead. Why we build books this way.

  • What made the hero nervous in the morning?
  • What did they do when they said goodbye at the door?
  • What's one thing you're excited to see at school?

Questions parents ask

When should we start reading it?

A week or two before the first day works well, so the story is familiar by the time the real day arrives. Writing and illustrating takes a few minutes, so there's time to read it more than once.

Can the story match our school or daycare?

Choose the school setting and tell us what's coming, like a first day of kindergarten, a new daycare, or switching schools, and the story is written around it.

Does this work for daycare and preschool too?

Yes. Pick the 2 to 4 reading age and describe the change, and the story will be pitched for a younger child.

Do I pick from ready-made books?

No. Every book is written and illustrated new from what you tell us: what your child is facing, a hero you name, their reading age and the setting. This page is a starting point, not a finished book.

How much does a book cost?

Ages 2–4: 24 pages for $7.99; Ages 5–7: 28 pages for $9.99; Ages 7–10: 32 pages for $11.99. Length and price follow the reading age you select, paid once. No subscription. Sign in before checkout and your first book is 20% off.

Do you use a photo of my child?

No, never. The hero is an original illustrated character you name and describe, so the story is about what your child is going through, not their face.

How do I get the book?

Writing and illustrating takes a few minutes after checkout. You read it in our online reader, download it as a PDF to print at home, and we email you when it's ready.
